In memory of Paul Herlinger
1929-2010 Paul Herlinger was born in New York City on May 1, 1929. He passed away peacefully at his home in Tacoma on Feb. 2, 2010. Paul Herlinger's greatest loves were his wife and family, classical music, theater, his career as a radio-TV producer and actor, and the Pacific Northwest where he was truly "at home" since moving here in 1956. Paul knew he would be a broadcaster from the time he was a high school student at New York's Stuyvesant High School. Chosen to attend an all-city radio workshop, Paul soon discovered he not only had a talent for radio-TV producing, but he was also blessed with a golden voice which he would use throughout his career as an actor in radio dramas and as a narrator for scores of documentaries and commercials. But New York City couldn't keep Paul. After two years at New York University he left to serve in the U. S. Marine Corps. and then attended the University of Michigan to finish his radio-TV schooling, earning a Master of Arts degree. There, he also met and fell in love with Ilona Planken, whom he married on September 1, 1956. Rather than returning east, he and his new bride drove an old grey Plymouth to Seattle and started a life in a land that he knew would be a refreshing alternative to the Big Apple. Settling in Tacoma, he indulged his love for the great outdoors. While working for KTNT-TV (1956-67) and KCPQ-TV (1967-1980), he pursued skiing, hiking, and mountain climbing (twice scaling Mt. Rainier), and even fused his passion for the environment with his work, producing documentaries on such important regional topics as whether the Nisqually Delta should be preserved as a wildlife refuge or become a supertanker port, and the controversy surrounding the old Tacoma smelter. Paul and his wife traveled extensively in Europe and the two teamed up to produce several seasons of TV travelogues called "Blue Horizons," broadcast locally on KTNT-TV (1965-72). Paul's voice gave him special distinction. He was called upon to narrate regional and national documentaries, had numerous commercial clients, appeared in radio dramas, and for more than 10 years, until recently, played the leading role of John Avery Whittaker in the radio drama series "Adventures in Odyssey", earning him fans worldwide. Most importantly, Paul Herlinger is remembered by his family as a man of peace and humility who genuinely believed in the goodness of the human spirit, who always had a listening ear and a word of encouragement, and who truly lived the words he taught his three children: to treat others the way you would want them to treat you. Paul Herlinger is survived by his loving wife, Ilona of 53 years; children, Mark, Teresa, and Glenn; and five grandchildren. At the family's request, there will be no services. A celebration of Paul's life is planned for a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care, PO Box 1502, Tacoma WA 98401, the National Wildlife Federation, or Nature Conservancy. Grover Stewart
Grover Stewart, longtime Puyallup businessman and resident known to his friends as "Stewart," has died at the age of 80. Born July 13, 1929, in Alabama, Stewart died Jan. 30 at home after a multiyear battle with cancer. One of 11 children of Thomas Grover and Ollie Stewart, he spent his early years near Stevenson, Ala. In 1940, the family left Alabama to continue share-cropping cotton and corn near Decherd, Tenn. In 1947, Stewart's family bought their own Tennessee farm. Youngest brother Arnold Stewart recalls he and his brothers and sisters walked to country schools. "We raised almost everything we ate _ cattle, hogs, chickens," Arnold said. "We only bought sugar and coffee." The only blond in a dark-haired family, Stewart was teased by his older sisters, who called him "Cottontop" and told him he'd be a movie star one day. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1948 until his honorable discharge in April 1952. His military service brought him to Fort Lewis, Wash., where Pfc. Stewart met Ruby Wiese at Tacoma's Merry Max dance hall. "I always thought he was so handsome in his uniform," she recalled. They married on Christmas Eve, 1950. After leaving the Army, Stewart began work at Western Auto in Puyallup, first as a sales clerk, then assistant manager and finally manager. In the 1980s, he also worked as general manager of the Puyallup Feed Store and later for Fors Feed before his retirement. Always ready to help his community, Stewart served multiple terms on the Puyallup City Council and also served on the Puyallup Planning Commission. He was an active and lifelong member of The Elks, Puyallup Lodge #1450. He also belonged to the Sumner Sportsmen's Association. In addition to his full-time jobs, he spent many years farming raspberries in the Puyallup Valley. In retirement, Stewart and Ruby kept busy on their Puyallup farm, keeping family, friends and the Puyallup Senior Center supplied with fresh raspberries, raspberry jam and vegetables from Stewart's meticulously tended garden. He is survived by his beloved wife; his three sons, Gary of Snoqualmie, Ron of Bellevue and Bob of Olympia; daughters-in-law Kathy, Colleen and Donna; grandchildren Erica, Shannon and Brian Stewart; his brothers Arnold and Bobby Stewart and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mariann A. Stillman
Passed away at age 86 on January 30, 2010 as a resident of the Roo-Lan Health Care Facility, Lodge II, in Lacey, WA. Mom (Nana) was born on September 24, 1923 to Emert and Gurine Davis in Tacoma, WA. She was graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942 and on June 6, 1942 Mom married our Dad, Charles F. (Chuck) Stillman. They would have been married 67 years in June 2009, but Dad passed on unexpectedly in April 2009. They lived in the Puyallup area for most of their adult lives and moved to Sumner, WA when Dad retired from Boeing. Mom was a homemaker, a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, and at one point she was a member of a hospital guild. She worked at Boeing for a brief period and often talked of the time she was sent to get "prop wash". In order "to make ends meet", Mom took employment for a number of years with the Puyallup School District as well. Mom shared her heart and home for many years by taking care of her only grandson and first granddaughter during some difficult times. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. Mom was always most proud of her Norwegian heritage and found humor in saying "Uff Da". Mom derived great pleasure from sewing, crocheting and knitting and had a particular love for dogs. You may have even seen Mom on an old bicycle, riding around the Puyallup valley, with her best friend and companion Taffy in her handle bar basket. Over the years she enjoyed family camping as well as camping with a group of family friends. She had a love for dancing and the "Big Band" era. She and Dad often traveled to Jazz Festivals and spent many years as "Snowbirds" in Yuma, Arizona. One of Mom’s simple pleasures was when she and her sister Alice McAlpine would attend "Red Hat Society" luncheons. Edward William Nelson
To quote our Dad: "No regrets, It's been one heck of a ride." Edward W. Nelson (Poppy) passed away at home in Gig Harbor on Feb. 4, 2010, surrounded by his family, and has gone to join his late wife Iola "Mommer" in a special place. Ed was born in 1920 in Tacoma, grew up in Port Orchard, and graduated from South Kitsap Union High School in 1938. Enthralled with flight, he joined the Army Air Corps and trained in aircraft repair and maintenance. He served in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. Ed met his future wife, Iola, at the Bremerton Airport, and they married in 1948. Ed flew Stearman biplanes and crop dusted throughout the west, and the stories of these exploits would fill a book. Edward was a well-respected business owner on Boeing Field. With his partner Hank, he operated E & H Aircraft, which was an aircraft maintenance shop that repaired all kinds of general aviation airplanes. In reality, there was nothing that he could not fix. His love of aviation evolved into a love of boating. He and Iola spent many years cruising the Northwest and Alaskan waters. As members of the Seattle and Rainier Yacht clubs, he enjoyed the many people they met while cruising. Ed was preceded in death by his wife Iola. He is survived by his four children, Mike (Louise), Steve (Michelle), Chris Miner (Tom), Jennifer Miles (James); seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, who loved him dearly and cherish all they learned from the great examples he set in life. Funeral services will be at Haven of Rest, Gig Harbor on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at 11:00am. Jean Hart Fritts
Jean Marie Hart Fritts, wife of her late and beloved husband R. Byard Fritts, on Monday, February 1st moved from body to spirit surrounded by family. Jean's legacy of love will never leave those of us that knew her as family or friend. Jean was born May 16, 1927, the only child of parents Ray and Marie Hart in Sterling, Illinois. She met her future husband at Wittenberg College in Sydney, Ohio and remained faithfully married for 57 years. Jean and Byard moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1949 and bought an apple orchard. The removal of two trees laid the groundwork for their home, which Byard built almost single-handedly. They raised a family of four and kept their home as a refuge of growth that extended to holidays and happiness for their grandchildren. Jean supported her husband's dream of teaching, performing and creating beautiful music delivered to many devoted students and audiences. Jean chose her own career to care and nurture the future of her children and all the friends and family that followed. Jean's intent was never to change others but to challenge herself. Her curiosity about life and meaning took her in recent years to various corners of the earth in travels of both mind and body. Jean, a certified teacher, never overtly taught her life lessons. She was not a preacher but a practitioner of life. We all in reflection have learned much and still have much to learn from the example of Jean's life. Jean's lesson plan, although unwritten, may have taken the following form: 1) Be compassionate 2) Be curious 3) Laugh (or in Jean's case giggle) at all things great and small 4) Forgive others and yourselves all weaknesses 5) Love and appreciate family, friends and all forms of life. Jean, we all love you and will keep you in our hearts forever: son Paul, daughters Carol, Susan, and Judy; grandchildren Ryan and wife Erin, Marissa and fiancé Erik, Benjamin, Skylar and Christine, sons- and daughter-in-law Bob, Glenn, and Carolyn, and friend for life Laura, as well as countless extended family members and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 6th at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 12115 Park Ave S, Tacoma, Washington. Memorials may be made to The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, 2608 Center Street Tacoma, WA 98409. Please sign online guest book at www.thenewstribune.com .

Marie LaFreniere Davis
Marie LaFreniere Davis, a lifelong optimist who trusted completely in the Lord, passed away on January 26 at University Place Care Center near Tacoma. Born January 20, 1910 in Yakima, Washington, Marie was the last surviving child of eight children. After growing up in Eastern Washington, she married Lyle William Davis on November 30, 1934 in Wenatchee. The couple eventually moved to Tacoma, where they had five children. Marie was a beauty with dark hair and twinkling eyes. Upbeat and cheerful, she focused all her attention on her family and gave love to all around her. An excellent seamstress, she made clothes for her daughters, grandchildren and even their dolls, a talent likely passed on from her father who was a tailor. Often she'd drape fabrics over the girls trying to decide which colors were best for each individual. Marie also sang in the church choir, sketched fine pencil portraits and grew vegetables and flowers. In the morning, she loved to listen to the birds wake up the family. Even in the most trying times she could find something positive to share. As a strong Christian, she had a tremendous love for the Lord and was eager to pray about any adversity around her. Some of her favorite verses were Phil. 4:4-7, John 15:5. After her husband died in 1957, Marie determinedly learned how to drive, returned to school and then worked as an LPN at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma for many years as well as in private care. But Marie was also well-known as a storyteller with a ready joke on hand. One of her best remembered stories was about the day she road her horse to school at the tender age of 4. The saddle loosened and swung her under the horse's belly. When the horse stopped, little Marie got off without a scratch. That's just how she was in her 100 years of life - always ending right side up with a positive attitude. Marie is survived by her daughters: Arlene Pettingill (Garrett) of Lakewood, Carolyn Hallstrom-Lott (Leslie) of Gig Harbor; Gayle Harris (Donald) of Seattle. She also is survived by sons Loran Davis (Sandy) of Renton, and Gary Davis (Maria) of Puyallup. Her surviving grandchildren include: Laura Fisch, Julie Bartlett, Mark and David Hallstrom, Hilary and Lindsay Harris. She also was blessed to have many great grandchildren. Her family wants to thank her caregivers who helped her over the years, the nurses and aides at UPCC and Hospice. The family suggests that any donations can be made to Franciscan Hospice in Tacoma. Private family ceremony.
