Her love of nature and her stewardship of the earth were integral to her character. Ellen graduated from Stanford University in 1957. She met George Ghilarducci there and they married in 1959, moving to Tacoma to raise a family. In 1973 she and George trekked across central Asia and the Middle East, and this sparked an interest in spiritual development and philanthropy that lasted the rest of her life. In 1975 she obtained a Master's in Social Work from University of Washington, and became an administrator at a mental health agency. She later founded the Tacoma Area Living Lightly Association, co-founded the Cascadia Revolving Loan Fund, served on the board of In Context magazine, became involved with the Chinook Learning Center (now Whidbey Institute), and joined the philanthropic Threshold Foundation. After the death of George in 1989, Ellen moved to Whidbey Island, WA. In 1995 she married Bernie Camin, and began a new phase of her life on the island. She was a founding member of the Circle of Caring, a support group to deal with issues of aging, and formed rich friendships through her Full Moon Group, the Lorian Association, and art work. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Bernie Camin; her three children, John (Denise), Emily (Tim Panzer) and George (Kelly) Ghilarducci; seven grandchildren; two stepchildren, Evan (Stacy) Caminker and Lisa Zolle; four step-grandchildren; and many other friends and family. | Chester H. Swenson March 15, 1922 Aug. 21, 2010 On August 21, 2010 we lost another hero from our greatest generation. While in the hospital recovering from a fall, Chester H. Swenson died peacefully in his sleep. Chet was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin to Archie and Florence Swenson. He grew up in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and attended the University of Minnesota for one year. The winds of war changed his focus from college to aviation, and he traveled to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, planning to become an aircraft mechanic. But the attack on Pearl Harbor altered his training from repairing planes to flying them, and he completed his flight school training in 1943. He was sent to the Pacific and became part of the 405th squadron of the 38th Bomb Group. Chet saw action in the Northern Solomon Islands, New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and the Philippines. As a Captain in the famous Green Dragon squadron, he flew 74 missions in a B-25 Mitchell and was awarded the Air Medal. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to Minnesota where he met the love of his life, Bette D. Jerlow, and they were married later that year. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by Northwest Airlines as a co-pilot. His career took the family from St. Paul to Seattle, Spokane, and finally, Tacoma in 1961. His career with Northwest spanned 37 years and he piloted just about every aircraft in their inventory: the DC-3, DC- 6 and DC-7, L-188 Electra, L-1049 Constellation, and the Boeing 707 and 727. He retired a senior 747 pilot in 1982, highly respected by his peers. He was a member of the Fircrest Golf Club and volunteered for the Fircrest and Tacoma Swim Clubs. Moving from Captain of the sky to Captain of the water, he purchased a 38 foot trawler and he and Bette and family roamed Puget Sound, the San Juans and Canadian waters in the beloved Option B. They also enjoyed traveling to Arizona in the winter and had many friends in Mesa and Scottsdale. Chet had a generous spirit and was a friend to many. He lived his life with grace, honor and dignity. We will miss him every day and he will live in our hearts forever. Although Chet never considered himself a hero, to his family he was. He is survived by Bette, his wife of 65 years, his sister Sylvia Nelson, and sons Gary (Sally), Craig and Dave (Jill). Grandchildren include Jamie, Sam, Davy (Jake), Heather (Trevor), Brooke and Luke. Great-granddaughters are Rubie and Paisley. Chets remains will be interred at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington, in a private family ceremony. A public celebration of Chets life will be held Sunday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. at the Fircrest Golf Club in Tacoma, Washington. Pub Date: 8/29/2010 |

She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Delta Delta. Concordia Luz Domingo AranaSept. 8, 1917-Aug. 19, 2010 Concordia Luz Domingo Arana, loving mother, grandmother and sister, called to be with the Lord, in the presence of her family's love, August 19. She was born September 8, 1917 to Christina Gamalinda and Perfecto Domingo in Victoria, Tarlac, Philippines. Luz, as fondly called by her relatives and friends, has been a fortress to her family. She took the responsibility of managing her family's finances as a teenager when her mother passed away and her father Perfecto Domingo was busy working as the school superintendant teacher for the town of Tarlac, Philippines. Luz made sure that all her 7 brothers and sisters finished their educations and got their college degrees. She then, in turn, completed her college education, majoring in English, Grammar and Literature as a working student. Luz was a dedicated high school teacher who mentored working students and inspired them to be successful. As a born leader, she became the president of the school teachers association and was voted unanimously by her co-teachers in spite of declining the position several times. As the head teacher of the evening class, she became an inspiration to many of her working students, who most are now college graduates in their own field. Being a single mom, she has dedicated her life to her family. Survived by an only daughter, Dr. Ladie Arana-Domondon, Luz nurtured her daughter with a firm loving hand, instilling the values of hard work, determination and the love of God. Luz dreamed of her daughter becoming a doctor. She prayed so hard from the day her daughter was born to obtain this dream. She became a rock to her daughter, weathering through the storm of life. In spite of her small finances, she made both ends meet to enable her daughter to get the best education and be successful in life. She lived a full life, realizing all her dreams, and even more, being blessed by a beautiful granddaughter, Sarah, who she raised with the same warmth and loving hand. Luz enjoyed seeing her granddaughter grow up to be another strong person just like her. Luz raised two more children and became a mother to Rey, her nephew, and Melody, her granddaughter who lives in the Philippines. Luz is survived by two sisters, Carmen and Rosario, her daughter Ladie and son-in-law Bert, granddaughters Sarah and Melody, nephews Rey (Domingo), Joey, Benjie, Moody, nieces Eileen, Marites, Marivic, Laureen, and all her 25 grandchildren. Visitation is 9:00AM to 9:00PM, TODAY, Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup. Funeral service will be held at All Saints Catholic Church in Puyallup Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 9:30AM, and interment at Gethsemane Catholic Cemetery, Federal Way, at 11:30AM.
